How to Use These ListsBack to top

Don't try to memorize all the words in one go. A more realistic plan:

  • Start with the 100 most common Czech words at the top of either list.
  • Pick the list that matches your goal: Spoken Czech if you want to talk with people, written Czech if you want to read news articles or books.
  • Work in small, easy-to-remember batches of 20 to 30 words.
  • Pay attention to the part of speech column. You will need some words of each type to form sentences, so make sure you mix it up!
  • When you see a word marked alternative form of ... or imperfective form of ..., the listed form is the one that is most commonly used, but the dictionary form is different.

Both word lists are extracted from the Wiktionary frequency-list page Wiktionary:Frequency lists/Czech wordlist:

  • Written Czech — the current revision of that page, based on the SYN2015 corpus.
  • Spoken Czech — an older revision based on movie subtitles from opensubtitles.org.

English translations and parts of speech were pulled from the corresponding Czech entries on en.wiktionary.org. Wiktionary content is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.

Some entries are blank where Wiktionary has no Czech section for that exact form, or where the definition is only a template.
